I spent the earlier part of my career doing motion design for broadcast and the web. These skills have been invaluable for creating motion prototypes. exemplifying interactions, and creating explainer/case study videos that accompany completed UI/UX projects.
Projects with a large scope and a long list of features can almost always benefit from a nice, brief video that explains everything to the client and/or users. This video explains Chartworks, an off-the-shelf financial charting application that my current company designs and develops.
Mobile and desktop apps with more complex interactions sometimes require motion prototypes to exemplify to the client and-or developers how transitions between screens occur. While I generally use After Effects, other prototyping tools such as Axure, Hype, or straight-up code are also in my repertoire.
